Munich, home of the Bratwurst, Biergartens, Sauerkraut, Pretzel, Apple Strudel and of course BMW. When you visit Munich, it is inevitable you will get your hands on a Bratwurst sausage and wash it down with a luscious Bavarian lager. Where better to do this than at one of Munich's famed beer halls/restaurants or biergartens, eating at these brauhaus (brew house) is a fantastic way to eat delicious rustic food at great prices. There are many to choose from; the Hofbrauhaus is one of Munich's main tourist attraction and Paulaner with its Biergarten is also nice on warm summer day. The pick of the lot and where the locals from Munich always rave about is Augustiner-Bräu, it is Munich's oldest brewer at 680 years old. Augustiner's Helles is also the favourite beer of Münchners, just ask one and you'll find out all about it.

I ate at the Augustiner-Bräu on a number of occasions, my favourites would have to be the 'leberknodel' soup (a liver dumpling sitting in a beef broth). Another one is the tasting pan, a monster meal I could not finish in one sitting consisting of 1/4 Roast Duck, Roast pork leg and Roast Pork belly sitting in a rich gravy, not the healthiest of meals but delicious. If a brewery is not your cup of drink there is the Donisl, which is a tavern cum restaurant right near the Marienplatz. It serves great quality food at very reasonable prices, I also ate a goose here for dinner that was done very well.

The Viktualienmarkt located in the center of Munich is a great spot in Munich to taste the local food and or buy some great ingredients to bring home and cook if you are not hungry. The market is massive and takes a whole block. At the Viktualienmarkt you find sausage stands where you can try a plethora of sausages, or buy them at one of the appealing butchers. There are juice stands, flowers, fruit and veg stalls, seafood stands and everything imaginable and of course wonderful bakeries (Bavarians love their bread and pastries, surprising I saw more bakeries here than in most French towns)

When you are around the market you should also tuck into a Leberkäse semmel, a staple snack for most Bavarians, it is yummy bavarian style meat loaf made of corned beef, bacon and onion, it's scrumptious sandwiched in a crusty roll. While at Viktualienmarkt make sure you get some Weißwurst, it's a traditional Bavarian sausage and probably my favourite sausage. The sausage is made of finely diced veal and bacon. It is traditionally eaten before noon with a Weißbier (white beer), Brezl (Pretzel) and Weisswurstsenf (a sweet mustard). Yeap the Germans sure know how to enjoy life, a sausage and beer before noon :)
